Emma Navarro reveals thoughts on repeated ‘billionaire’s daughter’ label

Emma Navarro has revealed she prefers to ignore being repeatedly labelled as a “billionaire’s daughter” in online coverage of her tennis career.
World No 10 Navarro has risen up the rankings in recent years, with the 24-year-old reaching a career-high ranking of eighth last September.
The US star has won two WTA Tour titles, including the Merida Open in 2025, and reached the semi-final of the 2024 US Open, alongside 2024 Wimbledon and 2025 Australian Open quarter-finals.
However, much of the coverage surrounding Navarro does not always focus on her tennis career, but instead on her family – in particular her father, Ben.
Ben Navarro is the owner of Credit One Bank and also owns two tennis tournaments, the Charleston Open and the Cincinnati Open, with an estimated net worth of $4.8 billion.
Because of that, the world No 10 is often referred to as a “billionaire’s daughter” in newspaper headlines, with a large focus on her family wealth.
Navarro had never previously publicly commented on that coverage but, in a recent interview with Tatler, offered intriguing insight into her upbringing.

The 24-year-old insisted that she ignored articles and comments, and claimed she had not been “handed things” growing up.
“I don’t read anything. I don’t read the comments, the articles, any of that stuff,” said Navarro.
“I don’t know what the fans are saying. There will be headlines and they kind of mention that [her father’s billionaire status] which is fine, but I didn’t grow up being handed things.
“We grew up in a sort of traditional way. We’d get up at 6am on a Saturday morning and go play tennis.
“Growing up it was a priority that we learnt toughness and we learnt work ethic and how to be intentional and purposeful and live productive lives so I don’t love being referred to as whoever with however much money’s daughter.
“It’s a label I don’t really like.”
The “billionaire’s daughter” tagline is also often used for world No 3 Jessica Pegula, whose parents, Terry and Kim, own the Buffalo Bills.
In her interview, Navarro revealed that Pegula was one of the players she had formed a friendship with since first coming onto the tour.
She added: “I’ve built good relationships, especially with other American players, just practising together and playing other tournaments like the Olympics and the Billie Jean King Cup.
“Jess and I have become good friends over the past year or so. But they’re also your competitors. It’s a little bit unique in that sense.
“You’re friends but you also have to play against each other.”
