Explainer – Why Emma Raducanu did not get automatic entry to Indian Wells event

Emma Raducanu celebrates

She is the talk of tennis after winning the US Open, but Emma Raducanu has not gained automatic entry to the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells next month.

Even though she is now ranked at No.22 in the updated WTA rankings, entries for the prestigious Indian Wells tournament – dubbed the fifth major – were submitted before her historic run to victory at Flushing Meadows.

While there are suggestions that tournament organisers are ready to offer Raducanu a wild card to enter the tournament that had 1000 ranking points up for grabs, she is currently only entered into the pre-qualifying event.

The men’s and women’s winners of the last Indian Wells tournament that was played in 2019 took home prize money of $1,354,010, with Raducanu now suddenly in a position to compete for these huge prizes.

This will be the last time Raducanu needs a wild card to enter a big tournament for some time, with her new ranking ensuring she will be an automatic entrant to all the big events in 2022.

Yet now the 18-year-old Brit has to decide whether she will play at Indian Wells, where the rankings points could give her a chance to challenge for a place at the lucrative end-of-season WTA Finals in Mexico.

“I will decide in the next few days where I’m going to go next. I haven’t had that much time to switch off and rest,” Raducanu said at at LTA event at the National Tennis Centre on Friday.

“I got back on court a few days ago, and yesterday I did a full training day.

“I was feeling pretty good about myself and my game, and I am very excited to compete again.

“All the opportunities I am getting have been very fun, but where I really want to be is on the tennis court, as I’m just thriving out there.

“I haven’t decided on my schedule yet – I will decide in the next few days where I am going to go to – but wherever I play next, I’m going to make sure I’m ready. I don’t want to jump into things too early.”

The BNP Paribas Open gets underway on October 4th.
