Emma Raducanu news: Brit brings home trophy from Laureus World Sports Awards

Emma Raducanu had an unbelievable season last year after she won the US Open and becoming the first qualifier to do so and now she’s been given another award as a result.

The Brit won the Breakthrough of the Year award at the Laureus World Sports Awards for her win at Flushing Meadows against opponent Leylah Fernandez.

The Laureus Awards were established in 1999 to support the work of Laureus Sport for Good, an organisation which helps over 160 community projects around the world, and the awards are an opportunity to honour sportspeople and team across the globe.

Raducanu’s US Open win subsequently catapulted her up the WTA rankings and she currently sits just outside of the top 10 as the world No 11, helped by her first wins of the clay court season at the Stuttgart Open last week.

Other sports stars who were recognised in the awards included F1 driver Max Verstappen, Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski, NFL great Tom Brady and British young skateboarder Sky Brown.

Roger Federer has been a favourite at the Laureus awards in recent years as he holds the records for the most awards won with six to his name.

The Bromley local managed to reach the quarter finals of the event in Stuttgart last week before she was beaten by world No 1 Iga Swiatek, but this is the furthest she’d gotten in a competition all season and she believes enjoying the game is key to success.

“At the US Open I think the biggest thing was just having zero expectation and just going out there and having fun every single match, having a swing and I think that’s something that over time I’ve definitely developed and starting to do more and more,” the 19-year-old explained.

“I’m just really enjoying my tennis at the moment.”

The next tournament up in the clay court season which Raducanu could be making an appearance at is the Madrid Open which gets underway from April 26.
