French Open fashion hits and misses: Carlos Alcaraz underwhelms as Marta Kostyuk stars
The city of Paris certainly knows a thing or two about fashion.
And tennis fans certainly enjoy discussing what their favourite players and the biggest names are wearing, with the Grand Slams always attracting a range of kits for followers to discuss.
The fashion stakes have certainly been high at the French Open this year with a few great outfits – but also some that haven’t quite hit the mark.
We look at some of the hits and misses of Roland Garros.

Marta Kostyuk – Hit
It took just a few hours into Day 1 of the tournament for some people to pick their fashion winner in the form of Ukrainian star Kostyuk.
The 18th seed battled her way into the second round in Paris with a 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-4 victory over Laura Pigossi, another big win in a career-best season to date.
And for some fans, Kostyuk didn’t just wow with her tennis.
The Australian Open quarter-finalist’s green Wilson dress has received universal praise on social media and is undeniably a huge hit in the fashion stakes.
Carlos Alcaraz – Miss
One of the biggest stars in modern tennis history, Alcaraz brings an energy and vibrancy to the court few have ever matched.
The reigning Wimbledon champion and world No 3 attracts attention wherever he goes and whatever he does, and will likely do so over the next decade.
But the Spaniard has been rather let down by Nike, who have handed him a rather drab outfit for his Roland Garros campaign.
Alcaraz’s simple black shirt and yellow shorts are a rather forgettable ensemble and come nowhere near reflecting what he can do on the court.

Ben Shelton and Iga Swiatek – Hit
Reigning French Open champion Swiatek and rising star Shelton are among two of the biggest and most popular players on the tour.
And, while it remains to be seen if they will win on court this fortnight, they are certainly among the big winners in the fashion stakes.
Both are sponsored by On and are wearing multicolour-blended outfits in Paris – ensembles that certainly catch the eye.
The outfits are certainly bold, but ultimately in a memorable, and very good, way.
Ajla Tomljanovic – Miss
Credit where credit is due: Australian star Tomljanovic did at least try something different with her Roland Garros attire.
Returning to tennis after her latest injury setback, the former Wimbledon and US Open quarter-finalist was beaten in three sets by 30th seed Dayana Yastremska.
However, it was her unusual Original Penguin checkered long-sleeved crop top and skirt that perhaps got more people talking.
It was certainly a memorable outfit, but that one that maybe didn’t quite cut the mustard.
Jelena Ostapenko – You Decide
You can never accuse the 2017 French Open champion of being boring, particularly when it comes to what she is wearing on court.
Ninth seed Ostapenko is not afraid of a bold outfit choice – and this year in Paris is no exception.
Sponsored by DK One, the Latvian is wearing a bright orange and turquoise outfit that has well and truly divided tennis fans.
