Holger Rune has admitted he should have withdrawn from the 2024 Miami Open after he was dismantled in a swift defeat in his opening match against Fabian Marozsan.

The world No 7 explained he knew he was not “feeling 100% well” on the day of the match but said he did not imagine his “energy level would be so low” on court.

Rune fell to a crushing 1-6, 1-6 loss to Marozsan in less than an hour in the second round of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament on Sunday, having received a first round bye as a seeded player.

The scoreline and speed of the contest shocked many observers, with Rune coming into Miami in good form after a run to the Indian Wells quarter-finals.

Marozsan, who is currently ranked 57th in the world, has already shown he can be a danger to top players, having stunned Carlos Alcaraz at the 2023 Italian Open.

The talented 24-year-old Hungarian has also achieved impressive results at Masters 1000 events, reaching the quarter-finals of the 2023 Shanghai Masters and the last 16 in Rome last year and Miami earlier this month.

In a post shared on X, Rune revealed he had not been feeling at his best physically in the match, while he looked ahead to the start of the clay-court season.

“Unfortunately this was the end of @MiamiOpen. I knew I wasn’t feeling 100% well today but I didn’t imagine my energy level would be so low,” he wrote.

“Looking back I should’ve pulled out. But it’s always difficult because I had been preparing and wanting to play for a week. Time to go back to Europe. Thanks for the support Miami.”

Rune has achieved encouraging results since he reunited with coach Patrick Mouratoglou last month. He reached the semi-finals at the Mexican Open in Acapulco in his first tournament with the Frenchman back in his coaching box, before his last eight appearance in Indian Wells.
