Holger Rune admits he is “very happy and pleased” to have linked up with Boris Becker, but he also made an intriguing remark about why he decided to hire the tennis great as his coach.

After working with Patrick Mouratoglou for six months, Rune announced in April this year that they had gone their separate ways while his mother and agent, Aneke Rune, later revealed there were “ego clashes” between the Frenchman and the Dane’s other coach Lars Christensen.

Following a disastrous post-Wimbledon run that saw him win only one match in six outings, Rune started working with Becker at the beginning of October and a few days after their trial run it was confirmed that he had hired the six-time Grand Slam winner for the remainder of the season.

And the partnership already delivered results at last week’s Swiss Indoors as Rune finally got out of his rut as he reached the semi-final having lost six of his previous seven matches before the ATP 500 event in Basel.

In an interview with Eurosport, Rune said Becker was the “perfect fit”.

“We’ve known each other for some years now and I thought that he has great experience both with his own career, but also as a coach,” he said.

“So, we talked a little bit, and we had a great practice week in Monaco, and here we are.

“It was my own decision to look around to see what I thought would fit me. I feel like I thought this would be good and it turned out to be good. So I’m very happy and pleased with that.”

The 20-year-old also made an interesting comment about one of the main reasons why he went with Becker, especially in light of his mother’s remarks about “ego clashes” between Mouratoglou and Christensen, who remains on the coaching team.

“I don’t know what will happen with the coaching situation now. It’s a bit strange. The team that worked at the end of the year (2022) suddenly didn’t work in Australia,” Aneke Rune told Ekstra Bladet.

“There were ego clashes between the coaches. The team that worked in the clay season suddenly doesn’t work now. Ego clash again? I don’t know.”

She added: “The fact is that it is Holger who pays the price for it every time, and that cannot be right.”

Rune himself didn’t want to share any of the “secrets” about the decision to team up with Becker, but one thing is clear: they are on the same page in terms of opinion and direction.

“We will keep that a secret. You will all see on the court,” Rune added.

“I think that’s important. You cannot have me [with] one opinion, he’s another opinion, you have to go in the same direction and that’s what we’re doing.”
