Boris Becker is set for a return to high-profile coaching as he is been working with rising star Holger Rune with a partnership announcement reportedly imminent.

Rune announced after the US Open that he had ended his working relationship with Patrick Mouratoglou after working with the Frenchman for nine months.

Although the Dane won his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title at the Paris Masters and reached a career-high of No 4 in the ATP Rankings while working with Mouratoglou, the decision to go their separate ways didn’t come as too big a surprise.

Rune has struggled with injuries and with his form in recent months as he has won only one match since reaching the quarter-final at Wimbledon. During that period he lost opening matches at the Canadian Open, Cincinnati Masters, the US Open and Shanghai Masters with his sole win coming in the first round of the China Open.

But it looks like the 20-year-old has already moved on in terms of his coaching team as he has worked together with six-time Grand Slam winner Becker in Monaco.

In a post on Instagram with photos of Becker and the rest of his team, Rune wrote: “Great practice week in Monaco 🙌🏽💪🏽”

The rising star’s mother and manager Aneke told Ekstra Bladet “he [Becker] helped Holger this week because Lars [Holger’s coach] was in Denmark”, but there have been suggestions that the German could join on a permanent basis – or even become a regular consultant.

This is Becker’s first coaching role since he was released from prison in December last year after he was found guilty of hiding £2.5m of assets and loans to avoid paying debts.

The former world No 1 spent eight months behind bars in two different prisons in the United Kingdom before he was deported to Germany.

After few months after his return to Germany he returned to commendatory at Eurosport and now it seems like he is ready to take the step back into coaching.

Becker’s last high-profile coaching role was Novak Djokovic from 2014 to 2016 with the Serbian winning six of his 24 Grand Slams during the stint.

Rune, meanwhile, is set to return to action at the Stockholm Open on Wednesday as he is the defending champion and top seed at the ATP 250 event. He will face either Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia or wildcard Karl Friberg from Sweden in the second round.
