Novak Djokovic may have ended 2024 without adding to his record-breaking haul of Grand Slam titles, but one statistic suggests he is still very much in the mix with the game’s greats.

Djokovic made the surprise move to hire Andy Murray as his coach for January’s Australian Open, as he looks to reignite his ambitions heading into what may be his final year as a professional player.

If he needs any inspiration to prove he is still competing with the game’s best, he needs only to look at win/loss index for this year on the ATP Tour.

It will come as no surprise that the dominant Jannik Sinner leads the way in these statistics with a staggering 92.4% win rate from a run of form that saw him win 73 of the 79 matches he played.

Carlos Alcaraz is second in this list with a win rate of 80.6% after winning 54 of the 67 matches he played in 2024.

Next on this list is Djokovic, with the limited number of matches he played somewhat diluting his statistics, but he still managed to win 37 of the 46 matches he competed in, giving him a win percentage of 80.4%.

That puts him ahead of world No 2 Alexander Zverev (69-21 and 76.6% win rate), with the resurgent Matteo Berrettini in fifth place on this list after winning 32 of the 44 matches he played in an injury-hit year for a win percentage of 72.2.

The top six in this list are completed by Grigor Dimitrov (71.9%), Tommy Paul (70.3%), Taylor Fritz (69.7%), Alex de Minaur (69.1%) and Daniil Medvedev (68.7%).

Plenty of sceptics have suggested the end of Djokovic’s glorious career is imminent, but the man himself has insisted he still has fire his heart to challenge for more titles next year.

That sentiment is echoed by super-coach Patrick Mouratoglou, who believes the Serbian will strike back with more Grand Slam success in 2025.

Speaking exclusively to Tennis365 ahead of the UTS Grand Final in London next week, Serena Williams’ former coach suggested writing off the all-time greats is a dangerous game.

“I think Novak had a very bad year, but it came after an incredible year,” Mouratoglou told Tennis365.

“Let’s not forget that only last year he won three Grand Slams and played in the final of the other. So we shouldn’t forget that was just one year ago, not ten years ago, just one year ago.

“He won the Olympics which was his main focus this year, beating Carlos in the final, playing fantastic tennis, so he is not far away.

“I think he can beat them (Sinner and Alcaraz). It’s very hard, there was a lot of margin before, but now there is none.

“When he plays them I think anyone can win, but I don’t think he’s far behind. I think he can still win Grand Slams, I’m sure about it.”

One Novak Djokovic comment shines a light on why he hired Andy Murray as his coach

Djokovic has insisted he still believes he can add to his collection of major titles, with Mouratoglou stressing the drive to push for more is the biggest threat to the former world No 1 in the final phase of his career after his big rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal retired.

“For Novak, it’s only about his motivation,” added Mouratoglou.

“I understand that he struggles with it at the moment because all his career was about beating the other two and being better than them, that was the fight of his life in tennis and he won.

“So to keep his motivation now, it’s very difficult. ow that Rafa is retiring, the whole year that was the problem, that’s how I see it, I don’t know if I’m right, but this year for Novak was tough.

“This is because from the start of the season, you could see that Rafa was struggling so much and probably came to his mind, well I won.

“When you fight all your life for something and you finally get it, where do you find the motivation?

“So I hope this difficult year is something he will be able to use to feed his motivation and come back next year as good as the previous one because then we’ll have a fight between those three that is going to be unbelievable and I want to see it.”
