Is Emma Raducanu the next female superstar?
Emma Raducanu has defied all odds to win this year’s US Open Final; the 18-year-old Brit is the youngest British Grand Slam finalist in the last 62 years.
She was the first qualifier among both males and females to make it to a major final, which shows how special she actually is. Raducanu is currently ranked 23rd in the world rankings after her historic victory.
The final between Raducanu and Fernandez was only the eighth time two teenagers have faced off in a Grand Slam Final in the open era. The two have shattered all odds to reach the final.
Emma Raducanu: A Superstar in The Making
Born on November 13, 2002, Emma Raducanu is a British national. Raducanu has always had that spark inside her. She flourished in her junior career, reaching the quarterfinals of both the US Open and the French Open while also winning three ITF Circuit titles.
Emma attempted to qualify for Wimbledon in 2018 and 2019 but couldn’t make it past the first qualifying rounds; however, in the 2021 edition, she surprised everyone and silenced all her doubters when she made it to the fourth round. Raducanu defeated Vitalia Diatchenko, Marketa Vondrousova, and Sorana Cirstea to reach the fourth round, in which she retired following the second set due to breathing difficulties against Ajla Tomlijanovic.
With this run, she became the youngest British woman to reach the Wimbledon third round since Elena Baltacha in 2002 and the youngest to reach the fourth round in the Open Era.
The 2021 US Open
Although Raducanu had announced her arrival with the Wimbledon run, she solidified her potential with her heroics in the 2021 US Open Final. She defied all odds and predictions and cruised to the final without losing a single set.
During her qualifying rounds, she defeated Bibiane Schoofs, Mariam Bolkvadze, and Mayar Sherif to make it to the main draw without dropping a single set.
During the main draw, she defeated Stefanie Voegele and Zhang Shuai; Shuai had beaten Raducanu before, but this time Raducanu dropped her in straight sets to set the record straight. She then defeated Sara Sorribes Tormo and Shelby Rogers to reach the last eight.
She faced off against Belinda Bencic in the quarters and took her down in a relatively easy 6-3 6-4 victory. With her 6-1 6-4 win over Maria Skkari, Raducanu became the first qualifier, male or female, to make it to a Grand Slam Final.
Raducanu also became the first British woman to reach a Grand Slam Final in 44 years and the first in 53 years to make it to the US Open Final.
