The entry list for the 2025 edition of the Italian Open ATP 1000 event is out, and Jannik Sinner’s comeback to the tour has been confirmed.

Sinner has not played since securing his third Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January, with the world No 1 serving a three-month suspension for returning two positive doping tests last March.

The 23-year-old’s suspension runs from February 9 until May 4, and his Rome entry means he will make his comeback on home soil.

This year’s Italian Open, which will be staged from May 7-18, will be the 82nd installment of the prestigious clay-court tournament.

World No 2 Alexander Zverev is the defending champion, having overcome Nicolas Jarry in the 2024 final at the Foro Italico.

How many players will feature in the main draw?

The Italian Open men’s singles main draw will feature 96 players, a total consisting of 79 direct entrants, 12 qualifiers and five wildcards.

Which players have received wildcards?

The wildcards for this year’s Italian Open are yet to be announced.

In 2024, all five wildcards went to Italian Players: Fabio Fognini, Matteo Gigante, Stefano Napolitano, Andrea Vavassori and Giulio Zeppieri.

Which former champions will play?

Three Italian Open champions are on the entry list: Zverev (2017 and 2024), Novak Djokovic (2008, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2020 and 2022), and Daniil Medvedev (2023).

Have any players used a protected ranking to enter?

Players who have been unable to compete in any tournaments due to injury for a minimum of six months are eligible to use the ATP protected ranking system.

The protected ranking will be determined by the player’s average ranking position during the first three months of their injury. They can use the protected ranking to enter nine tournaments and for a period of nine months from the first event they play after returning.

Reilly Opelka, a former world No 17 currently ranked 105th as he continues his comeback, has used his protected ranking of 33 to enter.

Have any players withdrawn?

As things stand, no players have withdrawn.
