Legendary tennis coach Rick Macci has delivered a glowing verdict on Jakub Mensik’s game and backed the Czech to reach a rankings milestone following his Miami Open title win.

Mensik upset his idol Novak Djokovic 7-6(4), 7-6(4) in the final of the 2025 Miami Open to win his maiden ATP title. He is only the fourth man to win their first career title at a Masters 1000 tournament.

The 19-year-old’s triumph in Miami launched him from 54th in the ATP Rankings to a new career-high position of world No 24.

The rising star’s victory over fifth-ranked Djokovic was his third win over a top 10 player during his run after he downed Jack Draper and Taylor Fritz.

The Czech now holds an outstanding 8-3 (72.7%) record from the 11 matches he has played against top 10 opponents.

Mensik is the second-youngest champion in the Miami Open’s history after four-time Grand Slam winner Carlos Alcaraz.

In a series of posts on X, Macci highlighted the quality of Mensik’s serve and backed the teenager to break into the top 10.

“He already has a very special complete game and his serve is already hitting spots at the key moments with 130 mph juice,” he wrote.

ATP Rankings: Sinner keeps gap over Alcaraz & Zverev, Djokovic consolidates, Mensik +30

“Everybody can pop it. But can you deliver the mail on time at the right time? The Czech checks that SERVICE BOX for sure. Top ten on the horizon.

“Huge upside with huge serve. The leg drive innates the racquet at the right time and the angle of descent of serve is coming in with mustard from a launched and elevated 6 ft 4 frame to a spot.”

The American added that Mensik will be a threat to Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and the rest of the top five in the near future.

“Jakub will be CZECKING Carlos and Jannik and the top five sooner than later,” the 70-year-old said.

In another tweet, Macci wrote: “When you deliver with QUALITY goods in a final and you are a new kid on the block and most everybody wants your opponent to get the W and you get the L it adds more substance. The CZECH yesterday grew and flew mentally to another level.”

Macci has worked with five players who achieved the world No 1 ranking in their careers: Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova, Jennifer Capriati and Andy Roddick. He also coached WTA Major champions Mary Pierce, Anastasia Myskina and Sofia Kenin.
