The last 5 Canadian Open men’s singles champions – ft. Jannik Sinner, Rafael Nadal
After the grass-court swing and the brief return to clay, all eyes now turn to the hard-court summer.
While some famous events have already taken place, the Canadian Open is the first huge event of the swing, with the Masters 1000 edition held in Montreal this year.
As world No 1 Jannik Sinner aims to defend his title, we look at the last five men’s singles champions.
2023: Jannik Sinner
Sinner’s rise to the world No 1 ranking started in Canada a year ago, when he claimed his first Masters 1000 title in Toronto.
The seventh seed in the draw, Sinner beat compatriot Matteo Berrettini in round two before receiving a walkover from Andy Murray.
The Italian then defeated Gael Monfils in three sets in their quarter-final clash, before beating Tommy Paul in straight sets to reach the final.
It was another straight-sets win for him in the final, downing Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-1 to triumph.
2022: Pablo Carreno Busta
One of the most surprising Masters 1000 champions of recent times, Carreno Busta defied his unseeded status to triumph in Montreal two years ago.
The Spaniard picked up eye-catching wins over 11th seed Matteo Berrettini and Holger Rune to start his campaign before victory over seventh seed Sinner sent him flying into the last eight.
Carreno Busta then downed Brits Jack Draper and Dan Evans to reach the final, where he came from a set down to beat eighth seed Hubert Hurkacz and lift the biggest title of his career.

2021: Daniil Medvedev
One of the leading hard-courters of this generation, it comes as no surprise to see former world No 1 Medvedev on this list – claiming the title three years ago.
Top seed in Toronto, Medvedev beat Alexander Bublik and James Duckworth to reach the last eight, where he came from a set down to battle past Hurkacz in three sets.
It was much more comfortable for him after that, defeating big-serving Americans John Isner and Reilly Opelka to claim the title.
2019: Rafael Nadal
Nadal claimed his fifth crown in Canada thanks to a dominant run to the title in 2019.
The Spaniard breezed past Evans and Guido Pella in his opening two matches, before rallying from a set down to beat Fabio Fognini in the last eight.
The top seed was then handed a semi-final walkover from Monfils, before losing just three games to Medvedev in a dominant final.
2018: Rafael Nadal
Nadal’s 2019 victory was a successful title defence, having won the title for the fourth time in 2018.
Again the top seed, the Spaniard overcame Benoit Paire and Stan Wawrinka in his first two matches, before battling back to beat Marin Cilic and reach the last four.
Nadal then fended off Karen Khachanov in two tight sets to reach the final, where he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas to seal victory.
