Davis Cup trophy

Madrid will get the honours of staging the first two editions of the new-look Davis Cup, the International Tennis Federation has confirmed.

La Caja Magica, which hosts the annual Madrid Open, has been selected to host the week-long event in November 2019 while it is yet to be decided if the same location the WiZink Centre will be the venue for the 2020 edition.

“We are delighted to be bringing the 2019 Davis Cup… finals to Madrid,” International Tennis Federation (ITF) President David Haggerty said.

“The city is a fitting location to stage the highest quality tennis… We look forward to working with the city to realise our ambitions of elevating the Davis Cup to a new level.”

It will be all change for Davis Cup next year as 18 teams will be split into six groups of three with the group winners and two best second-placed teams advancing to the quarter-finals.

This year’s semi-finalists Croatia, France, Spain and the United States were automatic entrants for next year’s event while Argentina and Great Britain have been handed wildcards.

The other 12 teams will come from the qualifying tournament that will be staged in February next year.
