Major coup for inaugural WTA Kentucky event as Serena Williams and Sloane Stephens sign up

Serena Williams

The inaugural Top Seed Open in Kentucky will feature two Grand Slam winners as Serena Williams and Sloane Stephens have both been confirmed for the tournament.

Former world No 1 and 23-time major winner Williams last played competitive tennis in February when she was part of the USA’s Davis Cup team that beat Latvia.

Stephens, the 2017 US Open champion, competed in the Monterrey Open in early March before tennis was suspended due to the coronavirus, while the American has also been in action at the World TeamTennis (WTT) event in Virginia.

The WTA Tour will resume on August 3 with the Palermo Open following a five-month enforced break and the event in Lexington as well as the Prague Open in the Czech Republic – both set to start on August 10 – were added to the revised calendar last week.

It will be followed the Cincinnati Masters at Flushing Meadows, which will be the final warm-up event before the 2020 US Open starts on August 31.
