‘It’s just a matter of time before Holger Rune wins a Grand Slam’

Holger Rune’s mother Aneke believes it is “just a matter of time” before her son wins his maiden Grand Slam title because he always achieves the goals he sets.

Aneke Rune recognised winning a major is a different challenge and explained the Dane is preparing for the test posed by the seven rounds and best-of-five set format.

The world No 6 has already achieved success in big best-of-three set tournaments, winning the 2022 Paris Masters and finishing as a runner-up at the Monte Carlo and Rome Masters 1000 events this year.

The furthest the 20-year-old has progressed in a Grand Slam is the quarter-finals – a feat he has achieved at the last two editions of the French Open and this year’s Wimbledon Championships.

It was confirmed today that Rune had added six-time major champion Boris Becker to his coaching team, having spent last week training with the German great.

Since Wimbledon in July, Rune has lost 10 of his last 11 matches during a difficult run, having struggled with a back injury.

Speaking on an episode of the ATP Tennis Radio Podcast, Aneke Rune discussed her son’s quest to make his major breakthrough.

“Now we all wish to get step-by-step, the same when we started senior, then he [Holger Rune] wanted to win 15,000 [Futures] and then 25,000 [Futures] and then it was Challengers. And then it was ATP 250, Masters 1000 and now it’s Grand Slams,” she explained.

“He really wants to win Grand Slams. And it’s not just something you do, it’s not that easy. So you have to work on specific things in your game and your physique in order to be able to manage five sets.

“If you want to win, you really have to be good. Not just in four but in seven matches, which is the challenge, so this is what he is working on. But every time Holger puts up a goal, then he reaches his goal. So it’s just a matter of time when we get the Grand Slam I guess.”

Aneke Rune also detailed what she focuses on when watching the world No 6’s matches.

“I’m mostly looking at if he’s doing what he is capable of doing. And if he is, it’s not so much a question about winning or losing, but if I can see that he is actually trying to do the right stuff, then I am satisfied,” she revealed.

“So it’s more these things I look at. Often I don’t know what the score is and so I’m not like into the match that way.”

Following his loss to Miomir Kecmanovic in his opening match at the ATP 250 event in Stockholm on Thursday, Rune insisted he feels he is on the right track.

“I felt myself and my game more today than I did in a while, so I feel confident now in making the last adjustments and finish the year strong,” said the Dane on his Instagram account.
