The 8 men to win Olympic Games tennis gold – ft. two-time champion Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal
The Olympic Games is arguably the biggest sporting event in the world, and the greatest players on the ATP Tour have battled it out for gold since the sport returned to the Games in 1988.
Ahead of action at the upcoming Olympics in Paris, we look back at the eight male players to claim singles gold – with Andy Murray the only player to do it twice.
1988: Miroslav Mecir
Czech star Mecir was the first man to win singles gold in the modern era, his run to the title perhaps overshadowed by Steffi Graf completing the Golden Calendar Slam in Seoul.
After downing Stefan Edberg in the last four, Mecir beat Tim Mayotte in four sets in the final.
1992: Marc Rosset
One of the most surprising gold medallists in tennis history, Rosset defied the odds to win Switzerland’s first tennis gold 32 years ago.
Unseeded, he knocked out top seed Jim Courier in round three, before battling past home star Jordi Arrese in a five-set thrilled to snatch gold.
1996: Andre Agassi
One of just two men to complete the ‘Golden Slam’, Agassi claimed his sole Olympic title on home turf at the Atlanta Games in 1996.
The tennis icon ended the surprise run of Leander Paes in the last four, before crushing Sergi Bruguera in the final to strike gold – ensuring a US sweep of the singles gold medals.
2000: Yevgney Kafelnikov
Former world No 1 Kafelnikov won Russia’s first tennis gold medal with a scintillating run to the title in Sydney 24 years ago.
He ended the surprise run of Frenchman Arnaud Di Pasquale in the last four, before edging past Tommy Haas in a five-set epic to add Olympic gold to his two Grand Slams.

2004: Nicolas Massu
Two decades on, Chilean Massu remains the only man to win singles and doubles gold in the same Olympics.
After capturing the doubles title alongside Fernando Gonzalez, he capped off an incredible week by downing Mardy Fish in the men’s singles final.
2008: Rafael Nadal
In the form of his career, Nadal won the first of his two Olympic gold medals with a run to singles glory at the Beijing 2008 Games.
The Spaniard edged past great rival Novak Djokovic in a three-set semi-final and then eased past Gonzalez in the gold medal match.
2012 & 2016: Andy Murray
A true Olympic icon, no player outside of Murray has ever defended their Olympic gold medal.
The Brit won his first gold on home soil at London 2012, beating Djokovic in the last four before breezing past Roger Federer in the gold medal match.
Four years later he struck gold again, defeating Juan Martin del Potro in an enthralling contest.
2021: Alexander Zverev
World No 4 Zverev comes into Paris as the reigning Olympic champion after his run to gold in Tokyo three years ago.
The German shocked Djokovic in the last four, before dominating against Karen Khachanov in the final.
