Nick Kyrgios opens up about his mental health, seeing psychologists

Nick Kyrgios has admitted there were times this season where he “wasn’t in the best mental health state”, but says he has turned to “some psychologists”.
The 23-year-old started the 2019 campaign as Australia’s No 1 and won the Brisbane International before reaching the fourth round of his home Grand Slam at Melbourne Park.
However, he didn’t kick on from there as he failed to make it to another final while he was often criticised for his lack of effort on court.
He also struggled with injury throughout the year and was forced to call an early end to his season due to an elbow injury.
“I was obviously struggling with a couple of things on and off the court this year, so it hasn’t been easy,” he told the Canberra Times.
“But I’m starting to see some psychologists and trying to get on top of my mental health.”
He added: “I’m just trying to enjoy myself again and get ready for a big 2019.
“There were times of the year where I wasn’t in the best mental health state, so I’ve got to go out there and just be happy and enjoy myself and tennis. I think when everything lines up in my life, tennis will take care of itself.
“I probably left it a little too long. But I’ve been doing that and I feel more open about talking about it, I don’t feel like I’ve got to hide that sort of stuff any more.”
Kyrgios, who has slipped to No 37 in the world rankings, has in the past admitted that “does not love tennis”, but he does see the upside of playing the game.
“I know I’m very lucky to be able to travel around and play tennis. I’ve been with a couple of things that haven’t been easy this year, but I’m sure it’ll be OK next year,” he said.
