Nick Kyrgios receives further punishment for Cincinnati meltdown, including huge possible suspension

Nick Kyrgios will be given a 16-week ban from the ATP Tour should he repeat the kind of antics seen at the Cincinnati Open last month.

Kyrgios was given a record $113,000 fine for eight offences, including abusing the empire and spitting in his direction, as well as leaving court without permission to smash rackets in the tunnel.

He has now been handed a further $25,000 fine on top of that, and been ordered to consent to accepting support from a mental coach during training and seek extra help from an anger management specialist before the end of the year.

“The investigation found a pattern of behaviour related to Kyrgios’s verbal abuse of officials and/or spectators in the past 12 months that constitutes a violation,” the ATP said in a statement.

“Following a clarification issued by the player the following day, it was determined that the incident did not constitute a player major offence, and no additional penalties were applied.”

The ATP, however, were satisfied that Kyrgios had not crossed the line over alleged accusations of corruption at the US Open.

He clarified the comments the following day, saying that he was not saying the original fine he received was a result of corruption, but rather double standards instead.

The APT added: “Separately, a second investigation took place related to comments made by Kyrgios towards ATP during the US Open.

“Following a clarification issued by the player the following day, it was determined that the incident did not constitute a Player Major Offence, and no additional penalties were applied.”

Kyrgios has been given five days to appeal the decision.
