Novak Djokovic’s classy and heartfelt gesture to fan revealed by Juan Martin del Potro
Juan Martin del Potro has shared an anecdote about Novak Djokovic that showcases the Serbian’s generous nature and appreciation for his fans.
Djokovic lost 4-6, 5-7 to del Potro in the Argentine’s farewell exhibition match in Buenos Aires on December 1.
After the match, an emotional Djokovic said: “I am also grateful for being able to play with my friend, with a great person and a great player, as well as a great rival.
“It is a very special day for me too. I do not know a person who does not love Juan Martin del Potro. Everyone loves him very much.
“Juan Martin is an example for all of us, and his greatest victory in life is being a wonderful person.”
Del Potro was beaten by fellow Argentine Federico Delbonis in his final competitive match at the 2022 Argentina Open.
That was the only match the 2009 US Open champion was able to play after suffering a knee injury at the 2019 Queen’s Club Championships. The previous year, del Potro had fractured his right kneecap at the 2018 Shanghai Masters.

Speaking on the Olga radio show after the exhibition in Buenos Aires, del Potro revealed how Djokovic helped a long-time fan to attend the event.
“He won’t tell you, but if he lets me, I will,” the former world No 3 said.
“There is an Argentinian who went to live in Serbia many years ago and has been his fan since day one. He had the opportunity to meet her and she wanted to come here for my farewell.
“She had a problem and couldn’t find a way to come, so Nole managed to get in touch with her again, called her back and paid for everything so she could attend the match. She came to Argentina and enjoyed the match.”
In a recent Instagram post written to Djokovic, del Potro thanked the 24-time major winner for agreeing to be his opponent in his farewell match.
“Your presence not only made this event unforgettable for me and my family but it transcended tennis,” the 36-year-old wrote.
“A whole country could enjoy and get excited with you, and it became clear that you are not only the greatest in sport history, but also in life.
“Argentina loves you, and we are eternally grateful for the show, the generosity and the delivery you gave to make this day perfect.
“I feel like something very special was born out of all of this: a sincere friendship that will last forever.
“I love you so much my friend. Thank you so much, and see you soon.”
