Novak Djokovic signs up for another event as big guns Dominic Thiem, Gael Monfils also join line-up

Novak Djokovic in action

The Serbia Open will boast another impressive field with 20-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic spearheading the main draw.

The Belgrade event made its return to the ATP Tour calendar in 2021 following a nine-year absence and it will again feature on this year’s schedule.

Local hero Djokovic lost in the semi-final last year, but he will be back as the top seed and the ATP 250 tournament in his home country will be his second event following his Sunshine Double setback.

The Serbian withdrew from the Indian Wells Open at the last minute after the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) confirmed they would not change their entry regulations for the United States with unvaccinated players not allowed into the country.

Djokovic then confirmed he will return to action at the Monte Carlo Masters, which runs from April 14-17, and he will follow it up with the Serbia Open, which starts on April 18.

The two-time champion will be joined by 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem, world No 25 Cristian Garin, world No 26 Karen Khachanov and world No 28 Gael Monfils.

Matteo Berrettini is the defending champion, but the Italian has not yet been confirmed for the 2022 edition while last year’s runner-up Aslan Karatsev, who beat Djokovic in the semi-final, also doesn’t feature in any promotional campaigns.

Besides Djokovic, the Serbia contingent will include Dusan Lajovic, Filip Krajinovic, Miomir Kecmanovic and Laslo Djere.
