Novak Djokovic slapped with big fine in Spain

Novak Djokovic has for the second time in the space of a few months found himself in trouble with the Marbella local council over his mansion in the southern Spanish resort area.
Tennis great Djokovic and his wife Jelena own a luxurious villa in Costa del Sol with the place reportedly worth £8.5m and the family often prefers to spend time there with their two children Stefan and Tara instead of Monte Carlo and New York.
The mansion has nine bedrooms, eight bathrooms, an indoor swimming pool, a cinema and television room, a gym as well as a spa with a sauna and Turkish bath. There is also a games room with billiards and a table football.
The Djokovic family decided to make changes to the house as they started major renovations back in 2022, but they have apparently not followed the strict rules and regulations from local authorities in the Spanish city.
According to Marbella24horas, the work was done without the necessary permits, leading to a couple of fines for the 24-time Grand Slam winner.
“The City Council of Marbella has been pursuing a process to restore planning legality against the Serbian and his wife since February 2024,” the report stated.
“The reason is that they have carried out the renovations that they launched at the end of 2022 of their mansion in the urbanization Sierra Blanca without a license.
“The result so far are two coercive fines, each of them of €5,000 (about £4,181), since the tennis player still does not comply with what he is asked: to submit documentation and demolish part of the works.”

There was also worked “carried out to eliminate the basement parking and create three floors, build a porch, and a bathroom and shower” that did not comply with regulations as the “changes violate the building height limit for the number of floors, as well as the minimum distance from boundaries”.
The Djokovic family was first fined on 6 August 2024 and another inspection took place last October, but the millionaires still hadn’t provided the required paperwork.
They were hit with a second €5,000 fine on 13 February and if they fail to comply they could be slapped with up to 12 fines.
But that would be a drop in the ocean for Djokovic, who has won $186,287,619 in career prize money while his net worth is more than $200m.
The Djokovic family, who also owns houses in Belgrade, Monte Carlo, Miami and New York City, prefer to spend their time in Marbella these days.
Back in 2023, one of the houses for sale in the area went on the market for £8.5m.
