Novak Djokovic makes ‘strange’ revelation as he opens up about Andy Murray partnership
Novak Djokovic has divulged that one aspect of his player-coach collaboration with Andy Murray has been “strange” ahead of his appearance at the 2025 Brisbane International.
The Serbian legend hailed Murray’s “meticulous” nature and dedication as he declared he expects to benefit from the Brit’s “unique perspective” on his game.
Last month, Djokovic hired Murray — one of his biggest former rivals — as his new coach in a move that shocked the tennis world.
The partnership came about less than four months after Murray’s retirement at the Paris Olympics in August.
Djokovic will begin his 2025 season at the ATP 250 tournament in Brisbane, where he is competing in both singles and doubles. The 37-year-old will take on Australian wildcard and world No 73 Rinky Hijikata in his opening round singles match.
The world No 7 will be joined by Murray after the tournament to prepare for the Australian Open, which will be his first event with the British great in his coaching box.

Speaking ahead of his appearance in Brisbane, Djokovic spoke about his collaboration with Murray and expressed his gratitude for the two-time Olympic champion.
“Being on the same side of the net is actually great for a change because he’s been one of my greatest rivals,” he explained.
“In a way, it was strange for me to share all these kinds of insights about how I feel on the court, sharing some of the secrets of what I’m going through, what I’m thinking about, how I see my game with somebody that has been always one of the top rivals.
“But I’m so glad and very thankful that he has accepted to work with me here in Australia.”
Djokovic also shed light on the time he spent training with Murray during the off-season and revealed what he thinks his fellow former world No 1 will offer him.
“The 10 days that we spent together were terrific. I enjoyed every bit of it. He’s very meticulous, he’s very dedicated, so professional,” the 24-time Grand Slam champion continued.
“It doesn’t surprise me because I’ve known him so many years as a player and obviously it’s a new experience for him as a coach and it came somewhat as a surprise to him and me that we are pairing up as a coach [and] player.
“He has a unique perspective on my game as one of the greatest rivals that I’ve had. He knows the pros and cons of my game.
“He has also played up to recently on the tour, so he knows all the other best players currently in the world, the youngsters and the weaknesses and strengths in their game. So I look forward to it, I really do.
“I think he’s bringing a fresh look to my game and I think I’ll be able to benefit from that, no doubt, on the tennis court. But also that kind of champion’s mentality that he has, I’m sure that we’ll match very well.”
Djokovic and Murray played 36 times during a rivalry spanning from 2006 to 2017, with the latter holding a 25-11 advantage. The pair met in 10 Grand Slam matches, including seven major finals.
