Tennis great Lindsay Davenport has expressed her belief that Novak Djokovic is capable of winning two or three Grand Slam titles in 2025.

The three-time Grand Slam champion also explained she was “happy” for Djokovic after his early exit at the US Open as she feels the Serbian needs to rest.

Djokovic’s US Open title defence ended with a four-set upset defeat to Alexei Popyrin in the third round at Flushing Meadows.

The loss was Djokovic’s earliest at a Grand Slam in over seven years and it ensured he will end a season without winning a major for the first time since 2017.

The 37-year-old tennis legend was also a semi-finalist at the Australian Open, a quarter-finalist at Roland Garros (where he withdrew through injury) and a runner-up at Wimbledon in 2024.

In 2023, Djokovic secured three Grand Slam titles in a season for the fourth time in his career to take his major tally to a men’s record of 24.

John McEnroe makes ‘surprising’ claim over Novak Djokovic’s final Grand Slam dream

Novak Djokovic rumoured to be lining up exhibition event that will see him follow in Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s footsteps

In an interview with Sport Klub, Davenport divulged why she feels Djokovic’s surprise US Open defeat could be beneficial for him.

“Of course I’m surprised he lost so early, but in a weird way, I’m happy for him. After all he’s done, it hasn’t been easy for him to play another major tournament since mid-May,” said the American.

“I really want him to rest well, to play whatever and however he wants until the end of the season. We keep forgetting that Novak is 37 years old, that he has been on tour for 20 years.

“He knows and feels it best. He needs time to enjoy, celebrate and then get ready for Australia. I believe that next year he can take two or three Grand Slams.”

The former world No 1 also gave her thoughts on the US Open success of Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe, who reached the final and semi-finals respectively.

“It’s good to finally have men involved at the highest level. We have been waiting for them for a long time,” Davenport added.

“We’re still talking about Andy Roddick, who was the last to enter the final, who was the last to win a Grand Slam.

“I’m happy for both Francis and Taylor, they worked really hard to get this result. I believe that this will be an incentive for them to continuously be in the finals of major tournaments.”
