Novak Djokovic makes statement about Andy Murray’s key role in ‘evolution’ of his game

Novak Djokovic has addressed how long he expects his collaboration with Andy Murray to continue as he discussed how he has benefitted from having his former rival as a coach.
The two former world No 1’s announced their surprise partnership in November and worked together for the first time during the off-season.
Murray’s first tournament in Djokovic’s coaching box was last month’s Australian Open, where the Serbian reached the semi-finals.
Djokovic delivered superb displays to defeat Tomas Machac, Jiri Lehecka and Carlos Alcaraz at Melbourne Park, before a hamstring injury forced him to retire in his semi-final match with Alexander Zverev.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion is competing without the company of Murray at this week’s Qatar Open in Doha.
Speaking to the ATP Tour’s media channel ahead of his appearance at the ATP 500 event, Djokovic explained he and Murray have extended their collaboration.
“We had a chat the day after I finished [the Australian Open] – we reflected on the period we spent together,” the 37-year-old divulged.

“We agreed he was going to take some time and think, speak with his family members and see if he decides to keep working.
“I expressed my desire to continue the collaboration with him so I am really glad he did accept.
“It is indefinite in terms of how long we are going to work together, but we agreed most likely in the [United] States and some clay-court tournaments. We will see how it goes after that.”
Asked if he has learned from Murray, Djokovic replied: “Yes, to some extent. He obviously has a unique perspective on my game. He has played me and all of the current best players in the world and knows everyone well.
“He knows exactly what we need to do tactically – the evolution of my game and what needs to be improved.
“He has a positive approach and has handled the whole pressure very well as it is a completely different situation from being there as a player.
“He has been terrific with all the other team members and while it was unfortunate the way the Australian Open finished with injury, we had a great run.”
