Rafael Nadal gives his fans some hope after Australian Open hammer blow
Rafael Nadal has given his fans hope that he will make a return to tennis for the clay court season after confirming he has pulled out of this month’s Australian Open due to injury.
The 37-year-old Spaniard, who had surgery on the psoas tendon in his left hip in June, was making his comeback at the Brisbane tournament.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion required medical treatment during his quarter-final loss to Jordan Thompson, and the 22-time Grand Slam champion said in a post on X: “During my last match in Brisbane I had a small problem on a muscle that as you know made me worried.
“Once I got to Melbourne I have had the chance to make an MRI and I have a micro tear on a muscle, not in the same part where I had the injury and that’s good news.
“Right now I am not ready to compete at the maximum level of exigence in five sets matches. I’m flying back to Spain to see my doctor, get some treatment and rest.”
The second part of his statement on social media channels offered real hope that he could make a return in the spring, where he will look to make a mark on the clay courts that he has dominated on for the last 15 years.
“I have worked very hard during the year for this comeback and as I always mentioned my goal is to be at my best level in three months,” he added clearly hinting at a clay court focus to his season.
“Within the sad news for me for not being able to play in front of the amazing Melbourne crowds, this is not very bad news and we all remain positive with the evolution for the season.
“I really wanted to play here in Australia and I have had the chance to play a few matches that made me very happy and positive. Thanks all for the support and see you soon!”

Nadal’s surgery last summer came with him having been sidelined since suffering an injury at last January’s Australian Open.
He returned with a 7-5 6-1 victory over Dominic Thiem in the first round in Brisbane and subsequently defeated Jason Kubler in straight sets before Thompson beat him 5-7 7-6 (6) 6-3.
The level of performance Nadal produced in those two match wins may well encourage him to believe he can compete with the best in the game once again if he can steer clear of injuries.
He will not return to his Academy base for a period of rest before considering whether to play at the Indian Wells and Miami Masters in March.
Given the tone of his statement, it would be no surprise to see him skip those two events and focus on the Monte Carlo Masters in April and what he hopes will be an injury-free run through to the French Open in Paris, where he will aim to win the title for a 15th time.
Nadal has admitted he doesn’t know where his career will finally end, but he wants it to be on a tennis court and not with a statement on social media.
While his withdrawal from the Australian Open is a blow to his army of fans around the world, it is clear that he still has hopes of ending his career on a high at some point in 2024.
