Rafael Nadal’s cryptic Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer comments spark a social media storm
Rafael Nadal’s rivalry with Novak Djokovic has rarely been friendly and the comments emerging from the Spaniard over the last year have confirmed as much.
Nadal was grudging in his compliments for Djokovic after he secured three Grand Slam title wins in 2023, while he was on the sidelines due to injury.
Now the 22-time Grand Slam champion has given an interview to El Pais where he was asked why his rivalry with Roger Federer was more talked about than his enduring duels with Djokovic.
His answer left plenty of ambiguity, as he suggested there are some topics he would rather not talk about.
“There are several factors. Some I won’t tell you because it’s difficult for me, it’s not my place to comment on them,” he said.
“In terms of tennis, it’s clear. It’s a combination of very radical styles. Roger was perfect in terms of aesthetics, elegance and technique.
“I have very good technique, but technique is not the same as aesthetics. They are two different things. He had incredible technique, doing things beautifully with impressive elegance.
“When I arrived, he was the number one in the world and a rival with long hair and an exuberant physique emerged. Elegance against a warrior.
“There was a unique combination of personalities and styles, combined with playing many matches on the most important stages, turned our rivalry into something that transcended more than any other match.”
Nadal’s comments suggesting he cannot comment on some of the reasons why Djokovic was not spoken about as much as Federer will raise plenty of eyebrows, with social media buzzing over what he meant by those remarks.

Djokovic fans who are always quick to defend their hero have suggested Nadal’s comments are referencing the theory that the Serbian star lacks the global popularity of his two great rivals.
Others have hinted Nadal may have been referencing some of Djokovic’s more controversial moments that have led to some divided opinions about his legacy in the sport.
Nadal was also asked to give his view on the player he has enjoyed watching most during his career, with Djokovic fans not impressed by the answer he gave.
“Since I have a memory of tennis, Federer is the player who has impressed me the most, the one who has entertained me the most, the one who has moved me the most,” he stated.
“Watching Federer play has moved me more than Djokovic, and in the end, tennis is about emotion; it’s the emotion that draws you to it.”
Nadal was also asked about Djokovic’s comment that he was intimidated by Nadal’s energetic warm-ups before he went out on court, with the Spaniard insisting that was never part of his plan.
“I’m playing Nadal in Roland Garros, and I have his locker next to my locker, right? So, we are so close,” said Djokovic in a recent interview with CNN.
“We’re trying to give each other space. But then the locker room is also not that big and the way you jump around like Nadal does before we go out on the court.
“In the locker room, he’s doing sprints next to you. I can even hear the music he’s listening to, you know, in his headphones. So, you know, it’s pissing me off.”
Nadal offered a swift response to those comments as he added: “It was never, never, never my intention [to intimidate]. I warm up like that, trying to be prepared and ready to go, and I work out, nothing more. I haven’t heard what he said, honestly.”
The rivalry between Nadal and Djokovic has been one of the most compelling in tennis history, with the apparent animosity the Spaniard feels towards the player who is now two Grand Slam titles ahead of him in the all-time list adding to the intrigue of tennis fans around the world.
With Nadal making his return to the court in 2024, all lovers of the sport will be hoping for at least one more showdown between the two most successful Grand Slam champions of the modern era in the men’s game.
