Roger Federer remains the highest-earning tennis player, but the 20-time Grand Slam winner is no longer the overall number one on Forbes’ Athletes Rich List.

Having earned a phenomenal $106.3 million the previous year to top the 2020 rich list, the 20-time Grand Slam winner’s earnings dropped to a “mere” $90 million the past year despite spending most of the year on the sidelines due to injury.

Whereas Federer, the only tennis player on the list, earned $6.3 million in prize money the previous term, injury meant he only pocketed $0.03m in prize money the past campaign.

The 39-year-old’s $90m was only good enough for seventh on Forbes’ Athletes Rich List, which was topped by UFC star Conor McGregor as The Notorious collected $180 million with Lionel Messi [$130m] and Cristiano Ronaldo [$120m] second and third respectively on the list.

The earnings are worked out from the first week of May 2020 to the first week of May 2021 and it calculates prize money, salaries, sponsorship deals and bonuses.

“The ten highest-paid athletes in the world took home pretax gross earnings of $1.05 billion during the past 12 months, 28% more than last year’s top earners,” Forbes stated.
