Serena Williams news: John McEnroe believes tennis great can win another Grand Slam this year
John McEnroe has tipped 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams to win another major trophy in 2022.
The 40-year-old hasn’t featured on the WTA in several months with her last competitive match in the first round at Wimbledon last year, when she picked up a serious ankle injury.
The American missed the US Open and was hopeful of returning for the Australian Open, but announced late in 2021 that she was not ready to participate at the highest level.
That withdrawal meant the former world No 1 hasn’t won a Grand Slam title since the 2017 Australian Open.
Now ranked No 59, Williams is not yet clear if she will be making a comeback in 2022, but McEnroe believes this is the year for Williams to shine again.
“Serena looks as though she is still training and trying to get herself ready and absolutely wants to try and break the record,” seven-time Grand Slam champion McEnroe told Eurosport.
“She seems very motivated still and I anticipate her coming back and making a real run at Wimbledon or trying to do one more US Open.”
Winning a major this year would see her equal Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 Grand Slams.
McEnroe added: “She is desperate for one more even though it doesn’t change anything in my book. She is one of the greatest athletes, male or female, that has played the sport, so of course we would like to see her play again, but she is also 40 and doesn’t have the fear factor that she once had amongst the younger players, so that makes it more difficult.”
