Simona Halep has posted the message she has been dreaming about sending to her fans over the last couple of years, after she was successful in her appeal against a doping suspension that threatened to end her career.

Halep is free to resume her career after the Court of Arbitration for Sport reduced her doping ban from four years to nine months.

The former Wimbledon champion tested positive for the blood-boosting drug Roxadustat at the US Open in 2022 and was handed the long ban last September.

Halep appealed to CAS and, following a hearing last month, the court has dramatically reduced the Romanian’s suspension.

A CAS statement read: “The CAS panel has unanimously determined that the four-year period of ineligibility imposed by the ITF (International Tennis Federation) independent tribunal is to be reduced to a period of ineligibility of nine months starting on October 7, 2022, which period expired on July 6, 2023.”

Halep has now released an emotional statement on her Instagram page, with her relief at the outcome of her appeal evident in each and every sentence.

“Today marks a pivotal moment, as the tribunal has rendered its verdict, affirming my stance and bringing clarity to this chapter,” was the opening line of her post.

“(1) In a unanimous decision, the tribunal has cleared me of any wrongdoing regarding the blood doping allegations.

“(2) It was also unanimously determined that the unfortunate incident of the roxadustat positive test stemmed from inadvertent supplement contamination, leading to a reduced sanction of nine months.

“(3) Furthermore, the tribunal has directed ITIA to compensate me with CHF 20,000

“In the midst of this challenging journey, my unwavering belief in the integrity of the truth and in the principles of justice has been my beacon.

“Despite facing daunting accusations and formidable opposition, my spirit remained buoyant, anchored in my unwavering conviction of being a clean athlete.

“This ordeal has been a testament to resilience, and the triumph of truth is a bittersweet vindication that, albeit delayed, is immensely gratifying.”

Halep could conceivably play in the Miami Open later this month, but she doesn’t have a WTA ranking due to her time away from the sport and would need wildcard to play.

It remains to be seen whether tournament directors will welcome her back right away and she may need some assistance to get her career back on track as she will not gain direct entry into major tournaments without exemptions.

“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to my legal team, whose steadfast faith and exceptional dedication have been instrumental in navigating through these turbulent times,” concluded her statement.

“Equally, my sponsors, loyal fans, and some commendable competitors have been my pillars of strength, offering unwavering support and solidarity.

“The overwhelming backing from so many Romanians has also fortified my resolve, enabling me to champion this cause to a rightful and honorable conclusion. Looking forward, I am eager to turn this page and rejoin the tour with renewed vigor and an invigorated spirit.”

One of the first people to respond to Halep’s Instagram post was Patrick Mouratoglou, who was her coach at the time she was given the supplement that contained the banned substance.

Mouratoglou admitted he ‘felt responsible’ for Halep’s plight as the incident happened while she was working with his team and he posted the simple message: “The truth prevailed.”

While this appeal verdict appears to be a complete vindication for Halep, the ITIA offered an alternative version of the story, as they suggested the CAS judgement was only ‘partially upheld an appeal from Halep against a disciplinary sanction’.
