Simona Halep confirms ‘small tear’ in left calf, but hopes to ‘speed up return’ with Roland Garros looming

Simona Halep in action

Simona Halep has revealed she suffered a “small tear” in her left calf during the Italian Open, making her a doubt for the French Open.

The former Roland Garros champion pulled up during her third-round clash against Angelique Kerber with a calf problem as she was forced to retire while leading 6-1, 3-3.

“After an MRI here in Rome I can confirm that I have small tear high up in the left calf,” Halep confirmed on social media.

“I will fly home and begin recovery in the pool and gym on Monday. I’m staying positive and will do everything I can to speed up my return.”

It means the 2018 French Open champion is now in a race against time to be fit for the clay-court Grand Slam, which starts on May 30.
