Stan Wawrinka news: Injury-hit three-time Grand Slam winner to make long-awaited return
Stan Wawrinka is set to return to competitive tennis next week following his injury nightmare with the former world No 3 signing up to play on the ATP Challenger Tour.
The three-time Grand Slam winner has not played since the Qatar Open in March last year as he underwent a small procedure on a foot injury.
He initially set his sights on a return to the grass-court season, but his recovery was slow and required a second operation, forcing him to miss Wimbledon, the US Open and this year’s Australian Open.
The Swiss will now take his first steps on court at the Andalucía Challenger event in Marbella, which starts on Sunday, after he was handed a wildcard.
If he comes through that tournament unscathed, then he will move up the ATP Tour as he has been awarded a wildcard for the Monte Carlo Masters, which runs from April 11-17.
