Stefanos Tsitsipas looks on

Stefanos Tsitsipas has revealed he regrets doing “certain things” this year after his defeat to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final in January.

The world No 4 reflected on “disappointing” periods of his mixed 2023 season, but is determined to fulfil his “big standards” by having a strong finish to the year.

The Greek defeated Alex De Minaur in straight sets last week to win the ATP 250 event in Los Cabos – his first ATP title in 14 months. He had lost five straight finals since winning in Mallorca last year – including his straight-set loss to Djokovic at the Australian Open this season.

Tsitsipas is in action at this week’s ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Toronto, where he was a runner-up in 2018. The 24-year-old will face Gael Monfils in his opening match after the Frenchman overcame Chris Eubanks in the first round.

Prior to the Canada Masters, Tsitsipas discussed a season that started with the high of his final appearance in Melbourne.

“My season has been good. I think I played my best tennis at the Australian Open swing. I regret certain things that I did and proceeded into after that, and I hope I can just learn from that,” said the Greek in a press conference.

“My season, honestly, after the Australian Open swing, after having collected so many points and being ahead in the rankings, and not having much to defend at the early US swing at the time in Miami and Indian Wells, it was kind disappointing due to my injury that occurred.

“And my clay court swing, in my opinion, could have been better. I wish I could have collected much more points there. But now it’s part of the past. I need to keep moving forward, and I need to keep building on what I have now on the present moment and take those opportunities and then maximize on them.

“I’m getting back into the rankings that I want to be seeing myself be at. I’m happy that I’ve been collecting some good, beneficial points for me in the last few weeks, and I hope I can keep going. You know, I have big standards in terms of finishing the year strong, and I want to deliver to that promise of mine.

“I want to finish the year and go on a nice vacation and say that I’ve tried my best these last few months to maximize as much as I can and have a big impact on the tour at the end of the year.”
