Tennis great on Novak Djokovic: ‘What he is doing not for himself but for tennis in general is unbelievable’
Bjorn Borg is big admirer of Novak Djokovic and he admits he is impressed with what the “fantastic” Serbian has done for the sport of tennis.
Djokovic has won 10 Grand Slams since the start of 2018 to take his tally to 22 and he now finds himself tied with Rafael Nadal for record.
He, of course, holds multiple milestones on his own as he has spent a record 380 weeks at No 1 in the ATP Rankings, has finished as the year-end No 1 on seven occasions and has won a record 38 ATP Masters titles, to name just a few.
The 35-year-old has also made no secret of the fact that he wants to set more records before he retires with one of his main goals being to claim the outright record for most Grand Slams.
Former world No 1 and 11-time major winner Borg has no doubt that Djokovic will win more Grand Slams while he also hailed his impact on the sport.
“Novak I think he might win one or two more Grand Slam tournaments, who knows, but what he is doing not for himself but for tennis in general is unbelievable,” the Swede told The ATP Tennis Radio Podcast.
“He’s still pushing the limits, he wants to be the greatest, he wants to win more tournaments and break all the records in tennis history, he’s a fantastic player.
“But to have these guys involved in tennis, you never know what Rafa is gonna do. Maybe play one more year. It’s up to him mentally or his body or whatever. But Novak’s gonna be around for a few more years and just enjoy the tennis.”
With Roger Federer retiring last year and Djokovic and Nadal in the final few years of their careers, there is a changing of the guard on the horizon.
Carlos Alcaraz has been the man to put up his hand as he won the US Open last year at the age of 19 while he also became the youngest world No 1.
Borg feels it is vital that the tennis community promotes the the up and coming stars.
The tennis legend added: “Then you have a new generation coming up with so many good players and it is very important for media to promote this new generation coming up because they are unbelievable, professional, they play great tennis, but it is important to promote these players.”
