Tennis Today: Novak Djokovic names ‘complete player’ whose recent rise worries him
In Tennis Today, Novak Djokovic hails one up-and-coming member of the NextGen as ‘a complete player’ and Roger Federer deals with retirement rumours.
What’s on the site
Andy Murray might have lost his fiery Shanghai Masters clash with Fabio Fognini, but there is much better news for fans of the Scotsman.
The former world number one will, it has been confirmed, make his return to singles Grand Slam tennis at next year’s Australian Open. Exciting!
Melbourne was, of course, the scene of Murray’s greatest low. It provided the backdrop as he tearfully confronted his likely retirement at the star of this year.
Thankfully, that didn’t come t pass, and he has been recalling how he felt watching a tribute video on court after his first-round loss last this year and why it was so ‘important’.
Someone else who has been been feeling reflective is Daniil Medvedev, as he promises to cut out the kind of behaviour that got him the wrong kind of headlines at the US Open last month.
What’s in the news
Of all the young talent that have come and gone on the ATP Tour during their lengthy reign at the top of tennis, Daniil Medvedev seems to have Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic worried.
No one has won more matches than Medvedev this season as he has recently mastered the art of reaching finals consistently.
Now, one of those three, Djokovic, has explained why Medvedev is so good.
“He’s improved his movement, his fitness,” Djokovic is quotes as saying on Tennishead.
“He’s got the big serve, he’s got the height and he uses angles very well,” said Djokovic.
“Backhand – hard to break that backhand, it’s very flat.
“He doesn’t make many mistakes and he can hit anything he wants from that corner.
“Forehand maybe has been his weaker side, but now he’s improved that, so he’s a very complete player.”
Meanwhile, the Express has given details of Roger Federer’s global exhibition tour this winter, totalling the potential mileage at a mental 100,000km.
