Tennis Today: Serena Williams among A-listers behind NWSL team and a look inside Rafael Nadal’s superyacht

Serena Williams deep in thought

In Tennis Today, Serena Williams joins fellow A-listers in investing in a new NWSL team in Los Angeles while “we” take a look inside Rafael Nadal’s superyacht.

What’s on the site

News still mostly centres around the US Open, the tennis calendar and the controversial Adria Tour.

The restart of the ATP Tour had a major setback as the Washington Open was cancelled. However, the United States Tennis Association insists the US Open and Cincinnati Open will go ahead as planned.

Meanwhile, the Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley insists the 2020 hard-court Grand Slam will take place at Melbourne Park while he also raised question marks about the top players competing at the US Open and French Open.

Then there is the Adria Tour debacle and Dominic Thiem has once again stood up for Novak Djokovic, saying the world No 1 “didn’t break any law” and didn’t “force anyone” to take part.

There was some good news in the world of tennis as Juan Martin del Potro has confirmed that he has started to hit again.

Meanwhile, Roger Federer’s coach Severin Luthi says the 20-time Grand Slam winner “still loves life on the circuit” and is not ready for a “change of lifestyle”.

What’s in the news

Danielle Collins has come in for some criticism after she was dismissed from the World Team Tennis for breaching Covid-19 protocols, reports Reuters.

In case you forgot, Collins was quite outspoken over Novak Djokovic’s comments about the “extreme” regulations that could be in place for this year’s US Open as she felt the top players should not moan about the entourage restrictions.

And now RT.com says fans are having a go at the American for being a hypocrite.

Serena Williams is among a host of female Hollywood stars who are investing in the new Los Angeles-based women’s football team ahead of the 2022 National Women’s Soccer League season.

And yes, her two-year-old daughter Olympia and husband Alexis Ohanian are also part of the group.

As for the A-listers, they include Natalie Portman, Eva Longoria and Jennifer Garner and here’s the story from NBC Los Angeles.

We all know you are curious to see what Rafael Nadal’s superyacht looks like on the inside. Well, wait no more as SuperYacht Times has you covered.

Disparities between men and women occur in all facets of entertainment, including sports media. The global sports fanbase is 50/50 men and women, yet female athletes receive just 4% of sports media coverage. And yet… US viewership of the 2019 Women’s World Cup final was 22% higher than the 2018 men’s final! After the unstoppable legacy of @USWNT, I was hungry to see and do more. ⚽️ That’s why I’m proud to help bring @weareangelcity to the City of Angels. This team is rewriting the playbook, and you can be a part of it. Welcome to the beginning. This is the kind of ambitious lead investing @Initialized is all about and we’re excited to announce this one-of-a-kind lifestyle, apparel, and sports organization. I am proud to be a part of this wonderful group (majority women!) working to bring a women’s professional football club to Los Angeles. Chiefly, because I’m a fan of the game, but also because I believe there is massive potential for the sport and it’s been undervalued by too many people for far too long. As someone who spends hours kicking around a football with my two-year-old daughter, I want her to have a front row seat to this revolution. I’m personally investing on behalf of my family because creating more opportunities in women’s sports is important to my wife @serenawilliams and me, and we want to be a part of making a better future for our daughter @olympiaohanian #WeAreAngelCity
