Tennis Today: Panic about Roger Federer retirement, Dominic Thiem makes Serena Williams proposition
In Tennis Today, who is getting a bit panicked about a possible Roger Federer retirement? Ok, fair enough, we all are, but who specifically? Also, Dominic Thiem makes an offer to Serena Williams to heal their recent rift.
What’s on the site
It’s all a bit about Andy Murray right now and, after two years of negative news, we are all for this more positive turn.
First of all, he has provided an update on his plans, telling us in pretty good detail when we can expect to see him back in singles competition. Wimbledon?
He is playing doubles at Queen’s, that much we know, but not with brother Jamie. So was that ever discussed?
Both of the Murray brothers also feature heavily in our rundown of the best British prospects at Wimbledon, with a heavy focus on the doubles competitions.
In non-Murray news, Roger Federer is officially rich. That’s not really news, right? Serena Williams too. All according to the latest Forbes listings.
What’s in the news
Dominic Thiem’s recent spat with Serena Williams at the French Open certainly grabbed the headlines, but he has proposed an interesting solution to make peace with the American.
A row erupted in Paris as Williams reportedly kicked Thiem out of the main media room at Roland Garros so she could quickly complete her obligations before heading off following her shock defeat to Sofia Kenin.
Thiem was understandably angered by the incident, but he has a solution…
“I feel a bit sorry for what happened,” he is quoted as saying.
“Maybe we can play mixed doubles in Wimbledon one day.”
In other news, Halle are very worried about losing the pull-factor of Roger Federer when he eventually decides to hang up his racket.
“There will be no successor who can replace him one on one,” tournament director Ralf Weber told westfalen-blatt.de.
“Everyone will have a hard time saying ‘I’m stepping into those footsteps now’.
“So, looking at the whole tournament, we have to make sure that we – as this year – have a great mix of world stars, German pros and players of the so-called Next Generation, the stars of tomorrow.
“Our viewers want to see attractive tennis. We want to offer that to them.”
