Players at the 2024 US Open will compete for the largest purse in tennis history after the USTA announced an astonishing prize money increase for action at Flushing Meadows.

Action at the US Open will get underway in less than three weeks, with Novak Djokovic the defending men’s singles champion and home favourite Coco Gauff the reigning women’s singles winner.

Djokovic and Gauff earned $3,000,000 for their victories, though there has been a 20% increase in 2024 – with the men’s and women’s singles champions set to receive $3,600,000 in winnings.

Runners-up in the main draw will receive $1,800,000, also an increase of 20% from the 2023 total of $1,500,000, with a total of $75,000,000 up for grabs across all events.

Players who lose in round one of the men’s and women’s singles draw will receive $100,000 in prize money, an increase of 23% from last summer.

There has been a 72% increase in round one prize money since 2019 – when players beaten in their opening match pocketed $58,000.

There has also been a significant increase in the doubles draws.

The total prize money pool for the men’s and women’s doubles has increased by 9%, with the respective winners receiving $750,000 – up on $700,000 from 2023.

The mixed doubles draw has a total increased prize money package of 18%, with the winners receiving $200,000 – $30,000 more than they did in 2023.

There will also be a prize money payout to wheelchair players who would have qualified for the main draw, with the event cancelled this year due to the Paralympic Games in Paris.

The US Open is set to be a fascinating fourth and final major of what has been an intriguing season so far.

Few would have fancied Djokovic’s chances of a successful title defence a few weeks ago, but his Olympic Games triumph has revitalised his season.

The Serbian will be among the leading contenders to triumph, alongside world No 1 Jannik Sinner and 2022 champion Carlos Alcaraz.

All eyes will be on Gauff in the women’s draw, as she attempts to become the first woman since compatriot Serena Williams to defend the title.

But she will face a tough time doing that, with world No 1 Iga Swiatek and No 3 Aryna Sabalenka among those standing in her way.
