With both the ATP and WTA Tours battling it out on the North American hardcourt swing, all roads are now leading to the final Grand Slam of the year at the US Open.

The Cincinnati Open is currently underway with several of the top stars in the men’s and women’s game looking to peak at the right time for the Flushing Meadows event.

Some top stars, however, will not be appearing in New York for the final major of the year, as nine players have already pulled out of the event.

Eight of those have come on the WTA Tour, led by the likes of Emma Raducanu, Hailey Baptiste, and Victoria Mboko, who will not be playing the tournament.

Mboko and Baptiste both suffered serious knee injuries earlier this year, so there was little doubt about whether they would play the US Open, but Raducanu has also been ruled out with injury.

The star’s stress fracture, which kept her out of Wimbledon, is serious enough to rule her out of the entirety of the North American hardcourt swing.

She is joined out of the Grand Slam by Ajla Tomljanovic, Varvara Gracheva, Irina-Camelia Begu, and most recently Jacqueline Cristian and Laura Siegemund.

The ATP Tour side of things is far more populated as things stand, with only Sebastian Korda confirmed to be missing the final Grand Slam of the year.

The American has not played since the Miami Open and he confirmed at the beginning of August that he has undergone back surgery for the injury.

“It’s been 4 months off-court managing pain in my back with a lot of pressure on my sciatica. After different treatments we decided to have a swift surgery that has finally relieved the pain. What a relief,” said Korda in a social media post.

“Massive thank you to Dr. Qureshi and his team. Now it is time to recover, heal and get back to work. Thanks everyone for the support. See ya’ll soon!”

  • Sebastian Korda (world No 50) > replaced by Aleksandar Vukic

Although Korda is the only men’s player to confirm his early exit from the US Open, there are whispers that there could be more coming.

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are still doubts, with the former in a race against time to recover from the wrist injury that has kept him out for five months.

Sinner, meanwhile, is dealing with a knee injury and has not played a single tournament in North America ahead of the Grand Slam.

Holger Rune could also miss the event as he tries to return to tennis after an ACL injury suffered at the Stockholm Open in October last year.

The Dane has, as yet, refused to withdraw from the US Open, however.

I see conclusions on me withdrawing from US Open,” he wrote recently on social media. “I did not withdraw. I am working super hard everyday and as soon as I am ready, I am ready. I hope it will be US Open.”

Rune and Alcaraz have been training together in Murcia ahead of the US Open, so there is a chance the two men could play the Grand Slam.
