Emma Raducanu and Tracy Austin have both tasted Grand Slam glory in New York.

For some players, the US Open has proven to be the absolute pinnacle of their careers.

Amid this year’s tournament, we look at the eight women who claimed their sole Grand Slam title – or titles – in New York.

Tracy Austin – 1979, 1981

Former world No 1 Austin is the only woman in the Open Era to win multiple US Open titles, but not win a major singles title elsewhere.

A 16-year-old Austin became the youngest US Open champion in history by beating Chris Evert in the 1979 final and defeated Martina Navratilova for a second title two years later.

The American was twice a semi-finalist at Wimbledon and reached Australian and French Open quarter-finals.

Gabriela Sabatini – 1990

One of the most popular players of her generation, Sabatini’s greatest career moment came at the US Open in 1990.

Having lost the 1988 final to Steffi Graf, the Argentine downed her long-term nemesis two years later to win the only Grand Slam singles title of her career.

Sabatini lost the 1991 Wimbledon final to Graf, while also reaching multiple semi-finals at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Samantha Stosur – 2011

Stosur won Slams across all three of the sport’s disciplines, with her only major singles title coming in New York 13 years ago.

The Australian battled past surprise semi-finalist Angelique Kerber to reach the final, where she stunned Serena Williams to lift the title.

The closest she came to winning another title was at the French Open, where she lost the final in 2010, and reached further semi-finals in 2009, 2012, and 2016.

Flavia Pennetta – 2015

Few could forget Pennetta’s epic run in New York nine years ago, when the 26th seed stormed through the draw – and announced her retirement immediately after her victory.

The Italian cruised past Simona Halep in the last four, before defeating compatriot Roberta Vinci in one of the most surprising Grand Slam finals ever.

Pennetta did not play another major after her victory, having reached a previous US Open semi-final in 2013 and an Australian Open quarter-final in 2014.

Sloane Stephens – 2017

Stephens is the only player to ever lift a Grand Slam title having used a protected ranking to enter the main draw.

The US star was 83rd in the world heading into the tournament in 2017, though downed Madison Keys in an all-American final to lift her sole major title.

The former world No 3 has come close to success elsewhere, reaching the French Open final in 2018 and the Australian Open semi-final in 2013.

Bianca Andreescu – 2019

Andreescu became the first, and currently, only Canadian to lift a Grand Slam singles title with her run in New York five years ago.

Aged only 19 at the time, the 15th seed beat Belinda Bencic in the last four before downing six-time champion Williams in the final.

Injuries have wreaked havoc on Andreescu throughout her career, and the former world No 4 has not reached the second week of a major outside of New York.

Emma Raducanu – 2021

Perhaps the most surprising Grand Slam triumph in history, Raducanu made history with her victory in New York three years ago.

Ranked 150th at the time, the Brit became the first qualifier to win a major title, not dropping a set on her way to lifting the trophy – beating Leylah Fernandez in the final.

That remains the only title of her career and she has not reached another major quarter-final, with two fourth round showings at Wimbledon in 2021 and 2024 her best efforts elsewhere.

Coco Gauff – 2023

Gauff won her first Grand Slam title at the US Open a year ago and is back defending her title this year.

The home favourite battled from a set down to beat Aryna Sabalenka in the final a year ago, becoming the ninth American woman to win the title in the Open Era.

She has been a French Open finalist and Australian Open semi-final previously, though will have to wait until 2025 to add to to haul elsewhere.
