Tennis Today: Maria Sharapova posts disappointing injury update with Roland Garros looming

In Tennis Today, Maria Sharapova disappointed fans with an injury update, while Andre Agassi gave us a corker of a throwback Thursday.
What’s on the site
What better way to start than with a Tennis365 exclusive from Judy Murray? The Godmother of tennis has been talking to us about Britain’s Fed Cup challenges and her roll in tackling them. It is, as you’d expect, an absolutely absorbing read.
Roger Federer has made a splendid start to 2019, and James Spencer has taken a look at exactly what could be behind that.
It’s not been quite as simple for Alexander Zverev, though. However, he has hit back at his critics, claiming injury can account for his struggles this season.
And, as usual, you can get up-to-date with all the latest tennis news in our dedicated news section.
What’s in the news
Those hoping to see Maria Sharapova back on a tennis court in Stuttgart will be disappointed after she announced she will not be fit enough to participate this year.
The Russian recently underwent a “small procedure” on the shoulder injury that kept her out of Indian Wells and the Miami Open, and it appears she is nt yet ready to return.
“To all my amazing fans in Germany that travel to see me play my favourite tournament in Stuttgart every year, I am really sorry to inform you that I have just ran out of time to be ready to play in Stuttgart,” Sharapova told fans in a statement.
“I am making very good progress but just not ready to compete at the highest level.”
It’s another blow for Stuttgart, which has also seen Elina Svitolina, Sloane Stephens, Danielle Collins and Dominika Cibulkova withdraw.
Sharapova is scheduled to return at the Madrid Open, which begins May 5, but it remains to be seen if that will prove to be the case.
