Today marks the first day of Wimbledon 2019 and first things first, here is your order of play for day one.
Then Michael Graham runs us through the narratives to watch at this year’s tournament.
Will they or won’t they team up in the mixed doubles at Wimbledon? Andy Murray and Serena Williams are both open to the idea.
What about Roger Federer’s chances of winning Wimbledon and adding another Grand Slam to his collection? Mats Wilander is not too sure.
Then there is your tennis betting preview and Derek Bilton believes Roger Federer and Ashleigh Barty will find a way at Wimbledon.
How about a masterclass from an elite coach ahead of Wimbledon? Kevin Palmer was the man who went through the drills.
What’s in the news
After coming under fire not including the Murrays in their rebrand strategy earlier this month, the LTA insists they want “to work with Andy Murray to increase tennis participation”.
LTA CEO Scott Lloyd told The Guardian: “I think me, Jamie, Andy and Judy all share the same philosophy. We want the sport growing. That’s about the grassroots first and foremost. We have a very healthy and open dialogue with Andy and Jamie.”
The Guardian also reports 15-year-old Cori Gauff, who will face Venus Williams in the first round at Wimbledon. Gauff, the youngest player to qualify for the main draw, is expected to earn more than $1m in off-court sponsorships this year.
From those with big sponsorship deals to those who struggle to make a living from tennis as The Guardian also has a piece on “the reality of tennis below the world of Wimbledon”.
The Telegraph has an exclusive with two-time Grand Slam winner Victoria Azarenka in which the former world No 1 reveals she “was forced to quit sponsorship deal after announcing she was pregnant”.
Eugenie Bouchard gets a lot of stick for some of her social media posts so good on the Canadian for coming out in The Telegraph (subscription) and saying “it is absurd if people think I only do what I post on social media”.
Staying with the dark side of social media and in the Daily Mail “Heather Watson reveals her horror at receiving racist abuse and death threats on social media”.
In The Telegraph, Novak Djokovic’s team wants him to give up his role on the ATP player council.
We all know you wondered what’s in the kit bag of a tennis player. Wonder no more as Sportsmail takes you through Kyle Edmund’s kit bag.
The Rolex watch caught our attention for some reason.
Daily Mail also has a piece on “shoe fanatic and French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova”.
Meanwhile, The Independent reports that Kyle Edmund it was “a very nice surprise” to play on Centre Court on day one.
