Tennis Today: Andy Murray and his ‘totally bionic hip’ a huge motivation, says injury-stricken ace

In Tennis Today, Andy Murray appears to be re-writing the rule book on what can be achieved after major surgery, and that’s proving to be a real motivation for similarly-stricken stars.

Daniil Medvedev was victorious yet again this week, and has his consistency done enough to convince us that he is the man to maintain to quality on the ATP Tour that Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic have gotten us used to? Michael Graham tackles the question.
Something ‘clicked’ for Medvedev in the USA apparently, in case you were wondering where this amazing improvement came from. He has been trying to explain it.
And the man himself has issued a warning to Nadal and Djokovic over his ambitions for next season…
Medvedev is heading to Moscow this week, and you can get some idea on how to beat the bookies in our weekly betting guide.
What’s in the news
Andy Murray has been hailed as an inspiration by Laura Robson as she battles her way back from a similar injury.
Robson underwent hip surgery in the summer of 2018 but her comeback has been much slower than Murray’s, but she has told the London Standard that a recent meeting with her 2012 Olympics mixed-doubles partner has given her renewed hope.
“I am just back on court recently, so I don’t want to rush it,” Robson said.
“Hips are very tricky, and I’ve spent a lot of time rehabbing so I’m excited to get back out there.
“[Murray’s] been at the national centre as well so we’ve seen him a lot and it’s been amazing to see his progress.
“We all saw him quite soon after his surgery, to where he is now, and you can see after every match the improvement that he’s making as well where you just get more used to it.
“You have to take motivation from that because he’s worked so hard to get back out there.
“He’s got a totally bionic hip now, so he’s one-upped me there, but I’ve had access to the same rehab programmes and physios as he has, so fingers crossed I’m able to do the same.”
And, sticking with British tennis, new British number one Dan Evans is not just content with what he has achieved so far.
He has been telling BBC Sport he has far loftier goals in mind.
