Tennis Today: Rafael Nadal bursts Big Three group bubble, Gael Monfils highlights uphill Roland Garros battle

Rafael Nadal in action

In Tennis Today, there is bad news for fans who got excited about a Big Three WhatsApp group while Gael Monfils explains just how difficult it would be for him to win the title at Roland Garros.

What’s on the site

It was a bit of a mixed day in terms of Andy Murray news as first there was a positive update from Queen’s Club with organisers confirming that the three-time Grand Slam winner is hopeful of playing at this year’s Fever-Tree Championships alongside Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Feliciano Lopez.

But a few hours later and Murray revealed that he could be forced to undergo more surgery, which will put his hopes of playing at Wimbledon and the Olympic Games this summer in jeopardy.

The Nick Kyrgios rollercoaster has hit Acapulco once again as the Australian was greeted by boos from fans after he withdrew midway through his first-round match.

Just a day earlier, Kyrgios took aim at clay-court tournaments during the middle of the hard-court season, saying it’s not good for tennis.

There’s some Davis Cup-ATP Cup news again as world No 1 Novak Djokovic has again pleaded for “one super cup” to be staged.

As for actual results, Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin’s post-Melbourne woes continue as she made another early exit.

There were no such problems for Rafael Nadal in Acapulco as the world No 2 is into the second round.

What’s in the news
Back to the Davis Cup-ATP Cup dilemma, former world No 1 and Australian Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt says the success of the ATP Cup put pressure on the International Tennis Federation.

“I might be biased but the crowds in Australia across the board with every single country that played was pretty amazing,” he is quoted as saying by ABC.net.

There is a very good interview with Gael Monfils in L’Equipe (translated by Express Sport) in which he explains how his chances of winning at Roland Garros is basically the same as winning the lottery.

Why?

He will have to beat Rafael Nadal, someone whom he has never beaten on clay.

Then there is Dominic Thiem, a player that he is yet to beat on any surface.

And of course there is also a certain Novak Djokovic, who has a 16-0 record over the Frenchman.

There is bad news for everyone who got excited about the Big Three WhatsApp group as Rafael Nadal has taken time out to explain that it’s not only the Big Three who are part of the group.

Earlier this week world No 1 Djokovic was asked about a Big Three WhatsApp group and he said there was a group and to be fair to Djokovic he didn’t go into too much information.

But Nadal has gone into detail about the group saying it’s an ATP Player Council chat.

“We do not have a group of us three but of more people,” he is quoted as saying by Express Sport.

“All of us who are on the players council to be informed of all the things that are happening and any news is transmitted there.

“Yes there is some other group in which we are all three but not only the three of us. It is not that we have a daily communication. The group is more for professional issues than personal issues.”

And here is the Twitter video.

What’s on social media
A Roger Federer GOAT joke.

Rafael Nadal is definitely NOT chatting in a WhatsApp Big Three group here.
