It’s gone a little bit wrong for Serena Williams of late. First she was beaten in the Wimbledon final by Angelique Kerber, and then this week Johanna Konta has handed her her worst ever defeat.
However, she has had disappointments before and always come roaring back – as Shahida Jacobs reminded us – and Serena herself doesn’t seem too bothered by it.
Elsewhere on the site, we continued our A to Z of Tennis series with an absolute corker.
Back on the court, it hasn’t been a good week for withdrawals, especially with the US Open looming large on the horizon.
WTA Tour stars Garbine Muguruza and Caroline Wozniacki have pulled out of Jane Jose and Washington respectively, and the ATP Tour has been hit too with Nick Kyrgios‘ latest blow.

What’s in the news
Roger Federer has revealed exactly when, health permitting, he will retire from tennis – and it sounds like it’s in someone else’s hands.
The 37-year-old continues to compete on the ATP Tour for the biggest prizes and, although he is now actively managing his schedule to conserve his energy more, is showing no real signs of age holding him back.
And he says, as long as he can steer clear of injury, he’ll quit when his family tell him they’ve had enough.
“Health has definitely a role to play in my decision-making,’ Federer admitted.
“Then, of course, it’s just discussions I always have with my wife about the family, about my kids, is everybody happy on tour. For the time being, it seems like absolutely no problem, which is wonderful. Then success to some extent also is key for staying out there really.”
