Tennis Today: Serena Williams upsets the Queen of England, and find out how Roger Federer spends his money
In Tennis Today, the dust settles on an incredible US Open, as Serena Williams is reportedly involved in the displeasure of the Queen of England.
What’s on the site
As the dust settles on what was a brilliant US Open, we have no shortage of reaction.
First of all, you can read how Bianca Andreescu and Rafael Nadal won two quite superb finals over the weekend.
Andreescu’s win hurt Serena Williams, and she admitted as much, but it has also inspired the 19-year-old to set some pretty ambitious career goals, and who’d bet against her right now?
He success was doubly remarkable given her age, but just where does Andreescu rank in terms of youngest WTA Grand Slam winners?
Away from the US Open, Gerard Pique has been setting out his plans for the new Davis Cup, and we have all those details here.
What’s in the news
Apparently, Serena Williams has upset the Queen of England. Well, she has indirectly at least.
Meghan Markle, who is married to the Queen’s grandson Prince Harry, has reportedly cut an isolated figure with regard her royal obligations since the birth of their first child.
She did, however, find the time to travel to New York to watch her friend Serena in the US Open final, and according to the media in North America, that hasn’t gone down well at all.
One article reads: “Scotland’s Braemar Gathering for the Highland Games, featuring the hammer throw and tug of war, has taken place for about nine hundred years and the royal family makes an annual appearance to cheer the competitors.
“The royals also enjoy a vacation in Scotland during the games.
“While the Queen, her son Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, and other royals watched the action, Meghan and Harry’s spokesperson said they were “too busy” and Archie, at four months, was “too young” to make the Scotland trip.
“However on Friday, Meghan shocked her subjects by taking a last-minute solo 3,500-mile (5,663-kilometre) flight to New York City to watch Williams at the U.S. Open.”
Elsewhere, a Chinese newspaper has published a feature telling us how Roger Federer spends his money, which is lovely and not at all jealousy-invoking. Honest.
What’s on social media?
The Canadian Prime Minister tweeted Bianca Andreescu a lovely congratulations message.
Congratulations @Bandreescu_! 🇨🇦 You’ve made history and made a whole country very proud. #SheTheNorth https://t.co/W98v1lUN9o
