Berrettini has certainly become a fan favourite and doesn’t miss the chance to get a smile out of his fans. The 27-year-old began his professional career in 2015 at 19 and made his ATP main draw debut at the 2017 Italian Open in 2017.
The Italian had a short but exciting stint in the recent Monte Carlo Masters tournament, having played some exciting matches. Unfortunately, his time was cut short due to a grade two tear to his internal oblique muscle. The Italian was set to face Monte Carlo Masters finalist Holger Rune in the round of 16, which could have been him had he been able to face the Danish star.
His interviews have always been a joy to watch and will certainly get you in a good mood. After winning a previous match, Berrettini did his post-match interview when a crowd member voiced their feelings about the Italian.
“It feels unbelievable, I’m really happy. Today was a really tough match, we stopped for the rain.” said Berrettini before being interrupted by a fan who asked “Matteo, will you marry me?” Berrettini couldn’t help but smile, and answered his eager fan by saying, “Let me think about it!”
Berrettini is a fun and lovable person who always seems happy when out on the court; sometimes, that happiness gets expressed through dance- which isn’t as exciting as his tennis.
He [Berrettini] certainly loves to get a reaction from his fans and often tries to get them to laugh. In one speech after winning a match, the Italian asked his crowd if they wanted him to talk in “Spanish or English?” which invoked a loud praise for the Italian. He expressed his love for his fans by saying, “Whatever you want.”
Berrettini has certainly played some memorable matches that have provoked some hilarious moments.
“Congratulations, what a turnaround that was; you really had to change the momentum, the energy. How did you do that.” asked the interviewer, to which Berrettini responded by saying, “I don’t know.”
Berrettini does not just excite the audience with his funny antics, but he also does so with his outstanding devotion and hunger for the game.
“Oh, he’s done it again. He fired a one-hander against Dan Evans, but this one probably tops it. That is absolutely outrageous from Matteo Berrettini.” said a commentator after Berrettini delivered an exquisite backhand to steal a point from Tommy Paul. We must agree with this verdict because it was one of his best shots.
