WATCH: Crazy Corentin Moutet tweener against Daniil Medvedev
We know it’s still clay-court season, but the grass-court campaign is not too far away so let’s whet the appetite with a brilliant tweener from Corentin Moutet at the 2021 Mallorca Championships.
Moutet was facing a bombardment of shots from top seed Daniil Medvedev and looked to be conceding the point after a near perfect drop shot from the Russian. However, the Frenchman had one final shot saved up his sleeve.
The 24-year-old chased down a pinpoint Medvedev lob that seemed impossible to return. He steadied himself and played a superb tweener down the line.
A tweener is a type of shot in tennis where the player hits it between their legs, hence the name tweener. It is a shot that is incredibly difficult to pull off and is by far one of the most entertaining ones in tennis.
“Oh, yes, of course, he’d make it,” remarked the commentator, who then added, “You’ve got to love it.” It was an exciting shot that stunned not only Medvedev but the entire audience, along with the commentators.
Medvedev, though, had the last laugh as he won 6-4, 6-2 and went on to lift the title, which is his only title on grass to date.
Hopefully, we will see some more impressive shots from the star on Wednesday when he faces fellow Frenchman Constant Lestienne in the round of 128 of the Madrid Open.
Moutet currently sits at No 64 in the ATP Rankings; however, his highest-ever rank saw reach No 51 back in November 2022. The Frenchman began his professional career in 2016. Since then, he has not been very successful, having claimed zero titles in his career.
The star has not played on any clay surface this season, which could hinder his time at the ATP Masters 1000 event in the Spanish capital this week. His last match came from the Australian Open in January, where he lost to 3-6, 6-4,6-2, 7-5 against Argentine’s Francisco Cerundolo in the second round.
His opponent, Lestienne, comes into this match as a favourite, having already played multiple games on the clay surface. Although, his last match saw him lose on clay to Austrian Dominic Thiem after retiring from the match. The pair only managed to complete one set, which ended 6-3.
The Frenchman is currently sitting two places ahead of Moutet at 63 in the ATP Rankings. Although, the 30-year-old has reached a career-high No 48 in the past. Lestienne started his professional career in 2012, and since then, the 30-year-old has been unable to grab any titles.
The competitors have faced each other three times over the course of their careers, with Lestienne claiming two wins over his fellow Frenchman. However, Moutet has won the only clay battle that the pair have squared up in, which puts the young star in good contention to move onto the next round.
