It was an emotional occasion for the Sinner family when Jannik Sinner received the ATP year-end No 1 trophy on home soil with the Italian admitting the family made “many sacrifices” over the years.

The 2024 season has been a phenomenal one for Sinner as he won his maiden Grand Slam at the start of the year when he lifted the Australian Open in January.

Five months later he went where no other Italian player has gone before as he became world No 1 and then in September he won his second major at the US Open.

The 23-year-old wrapped up the year-end No 1 ranking en route to winning the Shanghai Masters and he was finally awarded the trophy on day two of the ATP Finals in Turin.

The camera flashed to his parents Johann and Siglinde Sinner when he lifted the trophy and his mother Siglinde was seen wiping away tears.

During a post-ceremony interview, Jannik was asked about the emotional scenes and replied: “I just heard that my mum was crying, which is something very cute.

“Only they know from the early ages and stages, when I was around 13, how many sacrifices we made as a family. We would have never thought that we would have this trophy at home at some point.

“These are only really dreams and then slowly you try to improve as a player and as a person.

“Now I’m standing here with one of the, if not maybe, the most special trophy I have.

“This is amazing because this is an achievement over 52 weeks so I’m very happy.”

Sinner’s parents rarely travel with him to watch his matches, but the fact that the ATP Finals takes place on home soil meant they were in attendance.

The 23-year-old always acknowledges his parents during interviews.

After winning the Australian Open he said: “I wish everyone could have my parents because they always let me choose whatever I wanted to, even when I was younger.

“I made also some other sports and they never put pressure on me, and I wish this freedom is possible for as many young kids as possible. Thank you so much to my parents.”

He later added: “I don’t see them so often, unfortunately, but when I see them it’s always great time (smiling).

“I went away from home when I was 14 years old. So I had to grow up quite fast, trying to cook for myself, trying to make laundry. You know, the first times it is different, you know, but then in the other way, that was maybe the fastest way to grow up.

“I think for me was tough, but for the parents to leave their son of 14 years old, it’s also not easy. They always gave me, they never put pressure on myself, which for me is maybe the key why I’m here today. I’m a very quite relaxed man, who just enjoys to play tennis. I’m 22 years old, so I also enjoy to do normal stuff.

“And that’s it. They are the perfect parents. Obviously, I know only them but they are awesome. And also my brother, he brings me honesty throughout the whole career I’m going through.”
