The world of tennis has brought us many exciting players over the years, with many being cemented into the history books as legends. John McEnroe is certainly a name that comes to mind when thinking about the true greats.

McEnroe returned to the court in 2018 to play an exhibition match in Hamburg against fellow former tennis professional Michael Stich.

The encounter was certainly a joy to watch, producing many great moments, both on and off the court. It was enjoyable and extremely motivating to watch McEnroe step out onto the court at 59 years old. The American showed the tennis world he could still put up an exciting display on the court.

One of the funniest moments from the match came in the second set. McEnroe had been brilliant. So, the American decided to sneak a few sips of beer from one of the fans to commemorate the occasion. The fan loved the moment and probably took the glass home to capture the memorable moment.

The former stars produced some incredible tennis, with McEnroe putting up some superb defensive work throughout the match.

At 32 seconds into the video, the legend will truly amaze you with his brick wall effort and surprising agility. You can see how happy he was to return to the court as he pumps his fist in celebration.

The fans and stars loved every moment, with one particular rally being amongst the favourites. At one minute and 10 seconds into the video, the pair squared up at the net, returning shots upon shots, with Stich coming up with the winner.

One of the best and funniest points came from McEnroe, who sent a soft-handed shot to catch his opponent out, leaving Stich with nothing to say but, “Oh, don’t you dare John.”

The match ended at 7-6, 2-6, 10-7, with Stich coming out on top.

The German was glad to have the chance to face McEnroe and commented on it by saying, “He’s a great personality, and I’m delighted that he accepted my invitation to Hamburg immediately. I’m sure that as a thank you for your loyalty to the finals we will offer our fans one more time great tennis, great entertainment and a match full of emotions.”

Hopefully, one day we will see some modern stars, like Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, return to the court to give us one final moment of joy.
