WATCH: Taylor Fritz solidifies semi-final spot in BMW Open
Taylor Fritz moves onto the semi-final of the BMW Open after defeating Austrian star Dominic Theim. A brilliant display of tennis from the pair that advertised their ability to produce magic on the clay court.
The stars have collided three times (in total) over the course of their careers, with Fritz winning two matches and Thiem winning three.
The pair battled it out, in yesterday’s quarter-finals, over one hour and 32 minutes before the American claimed the win.
Fritz rapidly took charge of the clash, winning three sets before the 29-year-old was able to come up with his own. However, both stars showed off their ability with some excellently executed shots that were incredible to behold.
Thiem won his first game after producing a perfectly powered strike that was too fast for the American to react in time.
The stars put on quite the display in the seventh set of the match. The pair fought valiantly to stun the crowd, as they produced an excellent rally, which ended after Thiem delivered a brilliant effort that was too perfect to counter.
“Oh, one of the rallies of the tournament.” said the commentator after Thiem secured the first point of the seventh set. We can certainly agree with that because they fought extremely hard and produced some incredible shots.
The American dictated the match and saw himself claim his fourth set without losing a single point. He seemed to be playing with a very aggressive style, sending rockets Thiem’s way.
Fritz smashed through the win with a thunderous strike to end the match with a final score of 3-6, 4-6.
Fritz served exceptionally well, managing to claim 32/45 points behind his first serve, and managed to grab 13/25 points on his second serve. However, the 25-year-old struggled to convert his break points, only managing to claim 3/9. Although, this did not hinder the star from moving on.
Theim also struggled to convert his break points, only managing to secure 1/5, ultimately costing the Austrian a spot in the semi-final.
“I never really know if I’m good on clay or not.” Fritz said during the Monte-Carlo Masters. We can certainly see after this match that the American has the ability to produce excellence on the clay court.
Firtz is set to battle Botic van de Zandschulp later today in the semi-final. Van de Zandchulp claimed his place in the tournament’s final stages after defeating Fritz’s fellow American Marcos Giron. The Dutch star put up a powerful and committed display to end the match 6-7 (5-7), 3-6.
